Vladyslav Heraskevych of Ukraine has been barred from participating in the Winter Olympics by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) due to his insistence on wearing a custom-designed helmet known as the ‘helmet of memory’. The helmet, adorned with images of 24 deceased Ukrainian athletes who lost their lives during Russia’s invasion, was deemed a political statement by the IOC.

Despite being informed that the helmet was not permitted, the 27-year-old skeleton pilot wore it during a training session. Following unsuccessful attempts to reach a compromise with the IOC, Heraskevych was disqualified and had his Olympics accreditation revoked.

Expressing his belief that not wearing the helmet would betray the memory of the athletes, Heraskevych intends to appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. In a social media post, he conveyed his feelings of emptiness and emphasized the importance of dignity.

His father and coach, Mykhailo, present at the venue, was visibly emotional upon hearing the news. The IOC stated that the disqualification was a result of Heraskevych’s refusal to adhere to their guidelines on athlete expression.

Discussions between Heraskevych and IOC President Kirsty Coventry failed to find common ground, with the IOC emphasizing the importance of respecting the venue for expressing his tribute to the fallen athletes.

Coventry, a Zimbabwean politician, traveled to Cortina for face-to-face discussions with Heraskevych, stressing the significance of the dialogue despite her unexpected presence.

Despite Heraskevych’s plea to lift the ban and receive an apology just before the competition, the IOC stood firm in rejecting his request, citing differences in cultural interpretations of mourning globally.
