In a heart-stopping incident, a skydiver found himself entangled with a plane during a jump, fighting for survival as his reserve parachute became caught on the aircraft. The intense situation unfolded during a planned formation jump involving 17 parachutists at 15,000 feet. As the first skydiver exited the plane, their reserve chute handle snagged on the wing flap of the Cessna Caravan, inadvertently deploying the parachute and causing the skydiver to be pulled backward into the plane’s stabilizer.

The pilot of the aircraft noticed a sudden pitch-up and a rapid decrease in airspeed, initially thinking the plane had stalled. Upon realizing the skydiver was caught on the tailplane, the pilot took appropriate actions to manage the situation. High above North Queensland, the pilot experienced challenges in controlling the aircraft due to the parachute entanglement.

Despite the emergency, 13 parachutists managed to jump from the plane, while the tangled skydiver used a hook knife to free himself by cutting the reserve parachute lines. Subsequently, the skydiver released the main parachute in freefall, landing safely with minor injuries after overcoming the challenging situation.

Following the incident, the pilot faced difficulties in controlling the damaged aircraft but eventually managed to maintain a gradual descent. The pilot declared a Mayday to Brisbane Centre ATC but ultimately decided to land the aircraft safely. The event underscored the importance of carrying a hook knife for emergency situations involving parachute deployments.

Investigations revealed that the pilot and aircraft did not adhere to weight and balance guidelines, although this factor did not contribute to the accident. The incident serves as a reminder of the critical role of safety equipment in extreme scenarios, highlighting the potential lifesaving benefits of being prepared for unforeseen challenges.
