A flight heading from London to San Francisco was redirected to Edinburgh today following an emergency declared by the pilot on board. The United Airlines aircraft departed London at 2:05 pm and landed in the Scottish capital around 4:40 pm after a 7700 squawk was issued, indicating a general emergency situation.

Originally en route to cross the North Atlantic Ocean, the plane altered its course and directed towards Edinburgh where unconfirmed reports suggest that emergency services were present upon landing.

FlightRadar24 indicated that the flight was scheduled to arrive in San Francisco at 5 pm on Friday, as reported by EdinburghLive. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service received a distress call at 4:11 pm but were not required upon arrival.

United Airlines informed that the aircraft landed in Edinburgh due to a “burning smell”. The airline arranged hotel accommodations for the 162 passengers and rebooked them on alternative flights to their respective destinations.

The Mirror has reached out to United Airlines for a statement.
