Canada is facing new accusations of unfair play during a women’s match against Switzerland at the Winter Olympics. The Canadian men’s team engaged in a heated argument with Sweden during their game, which was overshadowed by a dispute over allegations of double-touching on the ice.
The Swedish team claimed that members of the Canadian team double-touched the stones beyond the hog line, the designated point for releasing a stone. The controversy continued into the next day when Canadian curler Rachel Homan had her stone disqualified for allegedly touching it after releasing it.
Despite Homan’s protests, according to World Curling regulations, there are no official video replays, and the decision of the on-ice official is final. Homan vehemently denied the accusation, stating, “Absolutely not.”
Her teammates also expressed frustration, with team member Emma Miskew stating, “It appeared to be a clean throw from our perspective, so I’m puzzled by that.” Homan added, “There is no way that happened. I would like to see a video.”
Following the match, Homan, still visibly upset, criticized the decision, saying, “I don’t comprehend the ruling. I will never understand it. We have never resorted to such tactics. This is unjustified.”
In response to the previous day’s events involving the men’s game, Curling Canada issued a statement addressing the cheating allegations and an incident involving Marc Kennedy’s use of inappropriate language on television. The statement clarified that officials thoroughly monitored for rule violations but found no evidence of infractions related to touching the stones.
The Canadian men’s team received a verbal warning for the language used during the game, with Curling Canada emphasizing its commitment to fair play and sportsmanship. Kennedy, while acknowledging his language mistake, defended his actions, stating, “When my integrity is questioned, I tend to react strongly, but I have never cheated to gain an advantage. I stand by that principle.”
