Spectators in the United States were amazed as they looked up to see a massive aircraft soaring above them, larger than an American football field. Videos shared on Reddit captured the impressive sight of the plane, resembling something out of a science fiction novel, cruising through the skies of California.
Aviation enthusiasts believe the colossal aircraft, likely created by Stratolaunch, is named the ‘Stratolaunch Roc’ and is recognized as the world’s largest aircraft. With a wingspan of 385 feet, surpassing the length of a football field, the plane’s design consists of two jets joined together and is powered by six Boeing 747 engines, weighing a staggering 1.3 million pounds during takeoff.
Named after a legendary bird of prey from Middle Eastern mythology, the Stratolaunch Roc is equipped to serve as a mobile launch platform for satellites and other space-bound payloads. The aircraft also carries the Talon-A2, a hypersonic plane capable of speeds up to 3,800mph, allowing it to circumnavigate the world in under seven hours.
Recent reports indicate that the Stratolaunch Roc successfully completed test flights in December 2024 and March 2025, as confirmed by the US Department of Defense. Zachary Krevor, CEO of Stratolaunch, expressed admiration for the team’s accomplishments, highlighting the successful flights and progress towards establishing hypersonic flight test services.
In a separate aviation development, the experimental X-59 plane, operated by Lockheed Martin, took its inaugural flight from California’s Skunk Works facility, flying for approximately an hour before landing at Edwards Air Force Base, located around 85 miles away.
