A woman from California faces murder charges following the discovery of her missing 9-year-old daughter’s remains in the United States. Ashlee Buzzard, aged 40, was taken into custody on December 23 in connection to the case. Sheriff-Coroner Bill Brown of Santa Barbara County stated that bullet casings near the child’s body were matched to a cartridge found in Buzzard’s Utah residence.

The body of Melodee Buzzard, the 9-year-old girl, was found on December 6 in a remote area of Utah after individuals taking photographs off State Route 24 stumbled upon the remains. Despite initial difficulties in identifying the body, authorities determined that she had died from gunshot wounds to the head. DNA analysis conducted by the FBI confirmed a familial match to Buzzard.

Law enforcement also discovered similar ammunition in a car that Buzzard had rented. Buzzard is currently being held without bail at the Northern Branch Jail in Santa Barbara. Details regarding her court appearance or legal representation were not available immediately.

Concerns about Melodee Buzzard’s absence were raised on October 14 by a school administrator. When deputies visited Buzzard’s residence in Lompoc, she refused to disclose her daughter’s whereabouts. It was revealed that Buzzard had left California with her daughter on October 7 in a rented white 2024 Chevrolet Malibu, traveling through multiple states before returning without her daughter.

Authorities noted that Buzzard and her daughter altered their appearances during their journey, with surveillance footage showing the child wearing a wig different from her natural hair color. The mother also changed wigs and license plates on their rental car to avoid detection.

Sheriff Bill Brown described the crime as “calculated, cold-blooded, and premeditated,” although a motive has yet to be established. He emphasized the tragedy of Melodee’s fate, stating that she deserved a better life. The weapon used in the crime remains missing, and investigations are ongoing.

Family members remembered Melodee as a lovable and well-behaved child. Her grandmother, Lilly Denes, shared memories of her granddaughter’s joyful demeanor. Denes recounted the heartbreaking moment when authorities informed her of the child’s fate, expressing her sorrow over the loss.

The case has garnered significant attention, with officials continuing their efforts to uncover more details surrounding the tragic incident.
