The Defence Secretary has pledged to put an end to the issue of substandard military housing, following the completion of upgrades to 1,000 properties ahead of schedule.
John Healey has directed an additional 250 military homes to receive priority renovations in the upcoming months, marking a 25% increase from the original target set less than a year ago. The housing improvement initiative has already enhanced nearly 700 properties in England, over 150 in Northern Ireland, more than 100 in Wales, and over 50 in Scotland.
Speaking exclusively to The Mirror at a barracks in Colchester, Mr. Healey expressed that the progress made has significantly boosted morale and retention rates, emphasizing his commitment to rectifying the longstanding issue of inadequate military housing.
Mr. Healey stated, “One of the most significant scandals in recent years has been the deplorable condition of the residences where our service members and their families reside. Within six months of taking office, we reclaimed 36,000 military family homes from privatization, initiating a £9 billion investment over the next decade to upgrade or rebuild nine out of 10 Forces family homes.”
He further added, “Our achievement of refurbishing a thousand of the most dilapidated homes ahead of schedule ensures that this Christmas, more families will be living in homes suitable for Heroes. These upgraded homes are now on par with what anyone would be proud to call home, marking a positive step towards rectifying this issue once and for all.”
Across the nation, homes have undergone extensive makeovers, including new flooring, replacement of unreliable boilers and heating systems, repair of leaky roofs, and installation of modern bathrooms, kitchens, windows, and doors.
Mr. Healey highlighted that these measures not only enhance morale but also contribute to retaining personnel within the forces. He emphasized, “The quality of housing has a direct impact on morale and retention rates in the armed forces, and I anticipate this initiative will have a positive effect on both aspects.”
Cpl Jack Crean, along with his partner Nina and their one-year-old son Charlie, recently moved into one of the newly renovated homes at Bassingbourn Barracks in Cambridgeshire. Cpl Crean expressed their delight at being in the new residence for Christmas, noting the significant improvement in their living conditions and the positive impact on their family’s well-being.
