America’s largest military aircraft experienced a mid-air emergency over the Pacific Ocean. The Lockheed C-5M Super Galaxy, the biggest aircraft in the United States Air Force inventory, encountered the emergency while en route to Hawaii after departing from Travis Air Force Base in California on Tuesday.

Designed for global heavy cargo transportation, the massive aircraft is capable of carrying tanks, helicopters, and large pallets worldwide, offering the Air Force a vital strategic airlift capability following its upgrade in 2009.

Upon descending, the flight safely returned to Travis Air Force Base and landed before 11 am local time. The reason for the emergency alert has yet to be confirmed by the United States Air Force.

Since its deployment during the Vietnam War in the 1960s, the aircraft has undergone significant costly enhancements, making the Super Galaxy one of the largest military planes in the US arsenal.

Measuring over 140ft in length and 19ft in width, the aircraft can accommodate up to five helicopters and is powered by four turbofan engines.

Travis Air Force Base, known as the ‘Gateway to the Pacific,’ handles a substantial amount of cargo and passenger traffic, surpassing other military air terminals in the country.

In a separate incident, a Ryanair flight bound for Tenerife had to return to the UK after declaring a mid-air emergency. The Boeing 737 MAX took off from Birmingham Airport on December 28 and signaled a general emergency over Brittany, France, due to encountering air turbulence, as confirmed by Ryanair on flight FR1121.

Passengers reported injuries during cabin service due to turbulence, prompting the flight to descend to 10,000ft before safely landing back at Birmingham Airport about one hour and 32 minutes after departure. The aircraft was parked on a remote stand for medical assistance.

Ryanair stated, “FR1121 from Birmingham to Tenerife on 28th December returned to Birmingham Airport shortly after take-off due to air turbulence. The aircraft landed normally before passengers disembarked and returned to the terminal, where a small number of passengers were provided with medical assistance. This flight continued to Tenerife at 21:06 local time.”
