Hansard tragically passed away during the Singer Arkle Challenge Trophy Novices’ Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. The eight-year-old horse, trained by Gary and Josh Moore, faced a devastating injury during the race and had to be put down.

The Jockey Club confirmed the unfortunate event, stating that Hansard sustained a fatal injury while competing in the second race of the day. Despite immediate attention from veterinary professionals, the decision was made to euthanize the horse for his welfare.

In the same event, Kargese, trained by Willie Mullins, emerged victorious in the 2pm Arkle Chase. Jockey Danny Mullins expressed his joy at the win, praising the horse’s performance and acknowledging the team effort led by Willie Mullins.

The horse racing community, represented by The Jockey Club, continuously strives to enhance safety measures for equine athletes. Significant investments have been made in equine welfare initiatives since 2000, amounting to over £63 million, focusing on veterinary care, education, and research.

The industry’s commitment to horse welfare is evident through initiatives like the Horse Welfare Board’s strategic plan ‘A Life Well Lived,’ which has contributed to a decline in fallers during races over the past two decades. Various measures, such as modifying jump markers, introducing padded hurdles, and implementing thorough post-fatal review processes, have been instrumental in reducing risks for horses.

Collaboration with leading welfare organizations like World Horse Welfare, RSPCA, and Blue Cross ensures that the highest standards are upheld in the racing sector. Public perception of horse welfare significantly improves after visits to equine facilities, with over 65,000 free opportunities available during National Racehorse Week.

With a significant attendance of five million in 2025, horse racing remains one of the most popular sports in the UK, illustrating its enduring appeal among spectators.
