A court has been informed that a woman allegedly stored her deceased brother-in-law’s body in her house for several months to profit financially. Upon entering the residence of Debbie and James Bebout, authorities were overwhelmed by a strong smell of decay, describing the living conditions as resembling a horror scene. The remains of Michael Bebout, aged 64, were discovered in a skeletal state, having been deceased for an extended period. Allegations suggest that his sister-in-law kept his decomposing body in the house to benefit from his social security benefits.

Debbie Bebout, aged 64, is anticipated to enter a plea of guilty to a felony theft charge as part of a plea agreement. Her husband, James Bebout, aged 68, is facing various charges, including theft, criminal conspiracy, and abuse of a corpse. Despite James Bebout claiming ignorance of his brother’s presence in the house, prosecutors argue that the overwhelming stench in the property makes it implausible.

The authorities were alerted on January 16 when Bebout reported finding his deceased brother while delivering breakfast at their residence in Pennsylvania. Upon investigation, only skeletal remains were recovered, indicating Michael Bebout likely passed away in August 2024.

During a preliminary hearing, Greene-Washington Regional Police Corporal Adrian Poux described the home’s conditions as unbearable, stating that the odor was so intense it was likened to an “olfactory deluge.” Chief Will DeForte characterized the scene as one of the most appalling and horrifying conditions they had encountered, with the dwelling filled with dog feces and cluttered like a hoarder’s residence.

Debbie Bebout had purportedly been posing as Michael’s primary caregiver, with James Bebout taking over on the day of the discovery. Investigations revealed that Debbie Bebout had been feigning care for Michael to continue cashing his social security payments, amounting to $6,189 (£3,069). The funds were reportedly utilized for household expenses, groceries, and heating kerosene.

While Debbie Bebout is set to admit to felony theft and likely receive a time-served sentence, James Bebout denies any involvement in the scheme. He claims unawareness of the situation until January 16 and refuses to accept responsibility for actions he did not commit. Assistant District Attorney Robert West argues that given the circumstances, it was implausible for James Bebout to be oblivious to the decomposing body within the residence.

James Bebout had one felony theft charge dismissed but will face trial for conspiracy to commit theft and misdemeanor abuse of a corpse. He is currently detained at Washington County Jail on a $6,000 (£2,976) cash bond, with his arraignment scheduled for January 27.
