Yvette Cooper initiates a review into lapses in information dissemination following overlooked controversial social media posts by activist Alaa Abd El-Fattah upon his release. The Foreign Secretary revealed that prior to his arrival in the UK on Boxing Day, there was ignorance among high-ranking officials regarding El-Fattah’s online comments advocating violence against Zionists and police.

Both Yvette Cooper and Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed approval of El-Fattah’s return, although they faced criticism as old tweets from 2010 resurfaced. Cooper informed Dame Emily Thornberry, chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee, that the existing procedures and due diligence measures were severely deficient in this instance. The government condemned the offensive nature of the tweets, for which El-Fattah has since expressed regret.

El-Fattah, who obtained UK citizenship in December 2021 during Boris Johnson’s premiership, was released after being pardoned by Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi. Despite calls from the Conservative and Labour parties to revoke his citizenship, there are currently no plans to do so.

El-Fattah has apologized for his past remarks, acknowledging their hurtful impact, especially during times of regional turmoil. UK officials defended their handling of the situation, emphasizing the importance of upholding religious and political freedoms while denouncing the offensive content of El-Fattah’s historical tweets.

Government sources believe there are insufficient grounds to strip El-Fattah of his citizenship, citing legal precedents that reserve such measures for cases involving fraud or serious criminal activities.
