A woman shared her harrowing experience of being attacked by a man she met on a dating site, who transformed from charming to monstrous. Katie Yates, a mother of two, engaged with Jason Smith on the dating platform Plenty of Fish. Initially appearing charming, Smith’s true sadistic nature emerged through aggressive and controlling behavior that ultimately led to criminal convictions for rape and assault.

Katie, who had been single for five years before joining Plenty of Fish in February 2018, found Smith appealing when he messaged her. However, as their relationship progressed, Smith’s behavior became increasingly alarming. From moving into Katie’s home under false pretenses to becoming physically and emotionally abusive, Smith’s actions escalated to a horrific extent, culminating in a violent bathtub drowning attempt.

Despite enduring relentless abuse and manipulation, Katie found the strength to seek help and report Smith to the authorities. Following a trial in June 2019, Smith was convicted of multiple charges and sentenced to 15 years in prison with a restraining order. Reflecting on the ordeal, Katie expressed relief at his incarceration but continues to struggle with trauma and fears of potential retribution upon his release in 2027.

Bravely speaking out against her abuser, Katie emphasized the importance of raising awareness about the dangers of domestic violence. She highlighted the need for vigilance and support for victims of abuse, emphasizing the lasting impact of such traumatic experiences.
