A young man and his stepfather have been brought before a court over the alleged savage murder of his mother, whose burned remains were discovered on the family’s premises. Gabriel Vilchez, 18, and David Gardiner, 64, have been accused of murder and mistreatment of a corpse in connection with the death of Silvia Vilchez.
Concerned friends of Silvia contacted the police when they could not find her, and upon officers’ arrival at the family residence for questioning, her son and husband claimed she was visiting her home country, Costa Rica. However, authorities became suspicious of the circumstances surrounding Silvia’s disappearance.
Following a property search, investigators found charred human remains confirmed to be Silvia’s by the Sequatchie County Sheriff’s Office. During a preliminary hearing, a law enforcement official revealed disturbing details of a gruesome scene in the family’s home office.
Detective Bryan Wilkie described red-brown stains on the walls and various surfaces, indicating a violent incident had occurred. Gabriel confessed to police that he assaulted Silvia with a bat in the office and disposed of her body in a fire pit. In a subsequent interview, he implicated his stepfather in the crime, stating that Gardiner witnessed the assault and participated in burning the body.
Conversely, Gardiner claimed ignorance of the events, attributing his lack of awareness to being a heavy sleeper. The motive behind the crime has not been disclosed publicly, but both individuals face charges of first-degree murder and abuse of a corpse. Gardiner’s bond was set at $250,000, while Gabriel was remanded without bail. Their next court appearance is scheduled for January 30.
This incident echoes the tragic case of a 13-year-old girl who allegedly killed her mother by slitting her throat after a dispute over a confiscated phone. Svetlana Cheglyakova, the mother, reportedly clashed with her daughter over internet usage, leading to the violent act and subsequent self-harm by the girl.
Under interrogation, the girl confessed to the stabbing, citing disagreements over internet usage and restrictions on social activities. Allegations of bullying and control by the mother were also made by the daughter. While the girl is hospitalized, the Russian Investigative Committee has initiated a murder investigation. However, due to her age falling below criminal responsibility in Russia, she cannot be prosecuted for her mother’s death.
