In the world of “Heated Rivalry,” two new actors have been added for Season 2, sparking mixed reactions from fans regarding the lack of body diversity in line with the original book descriptions. Crave announced that Justice Smith and Charlie Gillespie will be joining the cast of the popular hockey romance series.

Gillespie, a talent from New Brunswick known for his role in “One Night Only,” will portray Troy Barrett, a forward for the Ottawa Centaurs. Smith, recognized for his appearances in various films like “I Saw the TV Glow” and “Pokémon Detective Pikachu,” will take on the role of Harris Drover, the Centaurs’ social media manager.

These characters are central to “Role Model,” the fifth book in Rachel Reid’s “Game Changers” series that serves as the inspiration for “Heated Rivalry.” The second season will continue to follow the main characters from the first season, Ilya Rozanov and Shane Hollander, while incorporating the story of Troy and Harris.

Director Jacob Tierney and producer Brendan Brady expressed their confidence in the chosen actors’ ability to bring depth and heart to the characters. Fan reactions have been divided, with some expressing excitement over the casting, while others are disappointed with the lack of body inclusivity, particularly in Smith’s portrayal of Harris.

Fans on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok shared their mixed feelings about the casting choices. Despite some criticisms, the producers have stood by their decisions, emphasizing the actors’ ability to capture the essence of the characters.

The second season of “Heated Rivalry” is scheduled for release in Spring 2027, with filming already underway. As the anticipation builds among fans, the production team has requested space and privacy for the cast and crew during filming.
