A large African spurred tortoise named Molly was discovered meandering slowly at Oak Hammock Marsh in Manitoba, far from its natural habitat in the Sahara desert. Staff at the marsh, led by Gillian Malchuk, were surprised by the tortoise’s presence, as it weighed 36 kilograms and was not native to the area. After receiving reports from the public and using the iNaturalist app to confirm the sighting, Malchuk and her colleagues quickly located Molly.

Despite initially expecting a smaller animal, the staff eventually found Molly in the parking lot. They provided her with food, guided tours, and care until her owners were identified through social media. Molly’s family, who had raised her for 15 years, reclaimed her from Malchuk on July 22. It was believed that Molly had escaped through a gap in their backyard fence during renovations.

The mystery remained as to how Molly traveled 20 kilometers to the marsh. One theory suggested that a well-intentioned individual may have relocated her, unaware of the risks to the tortoise in a wetland environment. Alternatively, some speculated that Molly navigated the distance on her own. Malchuk expressed admiration for the tortoise’s resilience and determination in her unexpected journey.
