A participant on the BBC quiz show “Only Connect” mentioned casually about entering an international whistling competition, sparking curiosity in writer Ben Shannon. Intrigued, Shannon signed up himself and his daughter, Sumire, for the Masters of Musical Whistling mailing list after a quick Google search.
Initially taking the contest lightly as a fun activity, Shannon, known for his ironic outlook on life, saw it as a low-stakes opportunity to bond with his daughter during the pandemic. Both Shannon and Sumire, who had learned whistling from her father, were surprised by the email inviting audition tapes a year later.
Upon discovering the competition was in-person in Los Angeles, Shannon sought coaching from Carole Anne Kaufman, known as the Whistling Diva. Taking the stage, Sumire won silver in the kid’s category with a rendition of the “Doraemon” theme, while Shannon clinched gold in the level one adults category with his performance of “It’s Not a Moon.” The victory resonated deeply with Shannon, revealing a shift from his ironic teenage self to a more sincere appreciation for pursuing what one truly cares about.
