Ben McKenzie, known for his role in The O.C., has shifted his focus from acting to exposing what he refers to as the “largest Ponzi scheme in history”: cryptocurrency. According to McKenzie, cryptocurrency often results in a few insiders making significant profits while most regular investors lose money. His documentary, Everyone Is Lying to You for Money, delves into these issues and advocates for increased regulation to safeguard investors.

Initially intrigued by cryptocurrency through a friend’s investment suggestion, McKenzie, with an economics background, delved into the industry and was struck by the perceived lack of substance within it. In 2022, he testified at a U.S. Senate committee hearing on cryptocurrency and co-authored a book titled Easy Money: Cryptocurrency, Casino Capitalism, and the Golden Age of Fraud.

While some industry figures have criticized McKenzie’s documentary for sensationalizing negative narratives around cryptocurrency, McKenzie emphasizes the need for enhanced regulatory measures to protect investors. In a recent interview, he highlighted the risks associated with crypto investments, pointing out how a few insiders profit immensely while many regular investors suffer losses.

In a notable example, McKenzie highlighted the case of Trump coin, a meme coin linked to the former U.S. president, where his family reportedly gained $1.4 billion while investors lost over $3 billion. He stressed that the privatized nature of cryptocurrencies opens avenues for manipulation and fraudulent activities, leaving investors vulnerable to scams.

Despite the losses faced by some investors, McKenzie observed that many still hold onto faith in cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. He explained that the allure of quick wealth and private ownership of currency entices individuals, particularly men, who are often targeted by the promises of financial success without governmental control.

In his documentary, McKenzie interviewed individuals who remained committed to cryptocurrencies despite significant losses, attributing their persistence to psychological factors like the sunk-cost fallacy. He expressed concern over society’s failure to provide a stable economic environment that discourages risky investments like crypto speculation.

McKenzie concluded by cautioning against viewing cryptocurrencies as a superior alternative to traditional financial systems, emphasizing that while criticisms of the current financial landscape are valid, crypto presents even greater risks to investors.
