Jamila Afelom, a mother from Morocco, could only recognize her daughter, Fatin Ben Homar Azizi, by a necklace she had given her before she set off on a fateful journey. Afelom discovered Fatin’s body in a hospital a day and a half after Fatin attempted to swim from Morocco to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta.

In a poignant video call with CBC News from Tétouan, Afelom vividly recounted the tragic events of late July, often appearing emotional as she shared memories of her daughter. Describing Fatin as bold, determined, and somewhat tomboyish, Afelom reflected on her daughter’s passion for soccer, a sport that brought her joy and purpose.

Fatin, a 26-year-old with a spirited personality, defied societal norms by pursuing her love for football, often skipping school to play. Her soccer coach, Adel El Kaab, spoke fondly of Fatin, highlighting her dedication and spirit. Despite warnings about the perils of irregular migration routes, Fatin and several other young women from the team embarked on a journey to Ceuta in search of a better future.

Afelom, a single mother who works at a cemetery in Tétouan, labors to support her family amidst challenging circumstances. Fatin, driven by a desire to uplift her family from poverty, dreamt of a brighter future in Europe. Tragically, her aspirations were cut short when she lost her life in a desperate attempt to reach Ceuta.

The story of Fatin’s untimely demise sheds light on the harsh realities faced by many young Moroccans seeking refuge and opportunity in Europe. As her family mourns her loss and grapples with the aftermath, they join countless others in the quest for dignity and closure for those lost in the pursuit of a better life.

In a region marred by economic hardship and social challenges, Fatin’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices and struggles endured by those yearning for a chance at a new beginning.
