Russian drone strikes in and around Kyiv continued for the fifth consecutive day on Monday, causing disruptions in daily life with constant air raid sirens. Kyiv and its neighboring areas have been facing swarms of drones, many of them equipped with jet engines, leading to casualties, property damages, and disruption. A significant incident occurred on Friday when a Russian drone attack triggered explosions at an ammunition depot, claiming the lives of 38 individuals.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stated on Sunday that the relentless drone assaults were intended to wear down the Ukrainian population. Zelenskiy revealed that Russia had launched nearly 1,500 drones at Ukraine in just four days, with more than half of them being jet-powered.
Furthermore, a Russian strike caused a fire at a terminal operated by the courier service Nova Poshta in the southern Odesa region, according to Gov. Oleh Kiper. In the city of Kryvyi Rih, an industrial business was targeted by a jet-powered drone attack, resulting in two injuries as confirmed by a local official on Monday.
Both Ukraine and Russia have escalated their attacks on economic targets in recent weeks, with Russia targeting warehouses of Ukraine’s major supermarket chains, postal service, and home-goods stores. In a retaliatory move, Ukraine also targeted Russian infrastructure, including a drone attack on a logistics hub in Russia’s Yekaterinburg reported by the local governor on Monday.
Russia has heightened its air assaults in the summer, leveraging Ukraine’s interceptor shortage against ballistic missiles. The increased use of daytime drone waves has disrupted the daily routines of Kyiv residents, leading to metro disruptions and halted train services across the Dnipro River during alerts.
Residents like nurse and psychologist Yulianna Oliynyk have been significantly affected by the ongoing air raid alerts. Oliynyk, along with her two sons, faced challenges reaching a school due to the disruptions caused by the alerts, which left them stranded on a metro platform. The continuous disruptions have forced families to seek shelter in metro stations, impacting their daily lives and routines.
