Donna Morrissey and her siblings were reminiscing over drinks one evening when she had an epiphany. Growing up in Newfoundland, Morrissey and her sisters spent most of their time indoors with their mother, while her brothers engaged in outdoor activities with their father. This pattern persisted into adulthood, but during the storytelling session, Morrissey discovered a new side to her late father as her brothers shared their tales.

This revelation inspired Morrissey’s latest book, titled “Tell It to the Water: Five Siblings Tell of Their Father’s Grief and His Struggle Back to Hope.” While the focus is on her father’s grief following his wife’s death from cancer, the narrative also delves into other tragic events, such as the loss of Morrissey’s brother, Ford, in a workplace accident four decades ago.

Reflecting on her writing journey, Morrissey, known for her fictional works, admitted that crafting this memoir exposed her to raw emotions, evoking tears and trembling in her voice. Despite drawing inspiration from personal experiences for her novels, she found it challenging to create characters capable of sharing these deeply personal stories.

The book’s chapters offer perspectives from Morrissey and her siblings, with each chapter clearly indicating the viewpoint. Bringing these stories to fruition involved numerous discussions between Morrissey and her siblings, delving into the emotions and intentions behind the recounted events. While this process occasionally led to sibling disagreements, Morrissey emphasized that any tensions were temporary, fostering a deeper bond among them.

Dr. Simon Sherry, a psychologist at Crux Psychology in Halifax, explained the intricacies of grief, highlighting the enduring emotional connections individuals maintain with their departed loved ones. He noted that even in death, relationships persist, evolving as individuals mature and gain new perspectives.

Morrissey expressed her hope that the book would prompt readers to reflect on their own family dynamics and provide a blueprint for those seeking to document their family histories. Despite the tragedies her family has faced, she emphasized that these experiences have brought her closer to her siblings, reinforcing their mutual support as they navigate life’s challenges.

By sharing their collective stories, Morrissey and her siblings have found solace in their shared past, recognizing the ongoing impact of their shared history on their lives.
