The Ottawa Redblacks have set a new record in the CFL, now holding the longest losing streak in the league’s modern history. Their 15th consecutive defeat came on Friday night against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, extending back to the previous season. This surpasses the Shreveport Pirates’ 14-game losing streak in 1994, as confirmed by CFL historian Steve Daniel.

Expressing disappointment, devoted Redblacks fan Jimmy Fata described the situation as “really disappointing,” questioning the underlying issues causing the team’s struggles. Fata, who witnessed the record-setting loss in Winnipeg, highlighted the lack of success in their touchdown-cutting tradition due to the ongoing losses.

Aside from the modern-day CFL record, the Redblacks’ losing streak now ranks as the third-longest in the entire CFL history dating back to 1907. Another loss against the Montreal Alouettes could tie them with the Hamilton Wildcats’ 16-game losing streak from 1948 to 1949 for the second spot. The first place belongs to two Ottawa CFL teams that endured a combined 25 consecutive losses between 1928 and 1932.

CFL historian Daniel explained that post-World War II, the league professionalized significantly, transitioning from amateurism to professionalism with increased competitiveness. Reflecting on past teams like the Wildcats and the historic Ottawa clubs, Daniel emphasized the evolution of football in Canada over the years.

Regarding the current Redblacks’ situation, Daniel suggested a continued focus on roster rebuilding, particularly on the defensive end. Head coach Ryan Dinwiddie made changes after the eighth loss, showing improvement in the team’s performance. Despite the challenges, Fata emphasized the importance of unwavering fan support through thick and thin, likening it to nurturing a child and staying loyal to the team.
