Describing the situation as a ‘stall’ rather than a regression, Reign emphasized that the trend of underrepresentation persisted. The supporting actor and supporting actress in a limited series awards were distributed the previous week at the Creative Arts Emmys, but the outcome did not alter the diversity deficit.
Following the event, the hashtag #EmmysSoWhite gained traction on social media, with users expressing disappointment in the Television Academy’s choices. Reign, who kickstarted the #OscarsSoWhite movement in 2015, underscored the persistent nature of the issue, stating that the consistent lack of diversity in award outcomes points to inherent biases within the voting system.
An analysis of the Emmy Awards’ transparency report revealed that a significant majority of voting members, 67 percent in 2026, were white. Despite some progress in diversifying the membership, Reign stressed the importance of addressing representation concerns beyond awards season, urging for inclusivity in all stages of storytelling production.
While actors of color faced a shutout during the live broadcast, acknowledgment was given to Ernest Harden Jr.’s acting win for his role in The Pitt, which was not featured during the main show. Additionally, director Hiro Murai made history by becoming the first Asian filmmaker to win best directing for a comedy series at the Emmys.
Diversity at the Emmys has witnessed fluctuations over the years, with a notable decline in performers of color receiving nominations in 2026 compared to the previous year.
