During a week-long experiment, Steve Finkbeiner’s team at the biomedical research Gladstone Institutes in San Francisco utilized their AI-powered microscope to study how cellular stress affects brain cells. The tool, operating solely on cell observations without external input, not only identified the relationship but also uncovered a phenomenon known as hormesis – a process where certain stressors can enhance cell resilience, according to Finkbeiner, a neurology and physiology professor at the University of California, San Francisco.
The discovery of hormesis and its swift revelation in the first trial by AI, in contrast to the decades it took humans to uncover it, left Finkbeiner amazed, giving him “goosebumps,” he expressed.
He highlighted the vast potential of AI to significantly accelerate scientific progress, overcoming human limitations such as resource constraints and time-consuming data analysis processes. AI has the capability to accomplish tasks in a matter of days that would have otherwise taken years, opening up new realms of scientific exploration.
Despite the transformative power of AI in scientific discovery, disseminating the benefits can be challenging amid concerns raised by doomsday scenarios surrounding the technology, portraying it as a potential existential threat to humanity.
While acknowledging the apprehension surrounding AI’s rapid advancement and its potential to surpass human control, Finkbeiner emphasized the importance of leveraging AI tools for advancing medical research and disease treatment.
‘At the cusp’ of scientific golden age
Anima Anandkumar, a computer scientist at Caltech and a co-leader of the AI4Science initiative, envisions AI as a catalyst for a new era of scientific breakthroughs, akin to a modern scientific golden age.
Highlighting the transformative impact of AI, Anandkumar cited advancements in creating AI-based high-resolution weather models that are not only faster but also more accurate than conventional methods, revolutionizing computational capabilities.
She drew parallels between AI innovations and historical breakthroughs like the telescope and microscope, which revolutionized scientific exploration and understanding of complex phenomena.
