In March 31, 1970, Father Leonard Joseph Kelly received a letter instructing him to swiftly depart his parish under the orders of Bishop John Michael O’Neill. The bishop emphasized the urgency of the situation, indicating that the priest’s actions were a grave concern that required immediate action.

The correspondence from O’Neill did not explicitly detail the nature of the priest’s transgressions, referring to them only as a significant issue that had been ongoing for an extended period. Instead of involving external authorities, the bishop directed Kelly to seek assistance at the Southdown Institute, a well-known therapy center near Toronto that has historically treated priests for various issues, including alcoholism, depression, and even pedophilia.

Recently discovered letters from Kelly’s personnel file have sparked legal proceedings in central Newfoundland. Guardian Insurance, the church’s insurer, is seeking a Norwich order to compel the Southdown Institute to provide records pertaining to Kelly’s admission in 1970. The insurer believes that these documents could reveal crucial information about the church’s awareness of Kelly’s potential risk to children, which could impact insurance coverage related to his abusive acts.

The church is currently embroiled in a lawsuit filed in 2022, alleging that Kelly engaged in sexual abuse in Gander. The plaintiff claims to have been subjected to repeated forced sexual acts by Kelly during a six-year period starting from when he was six years old.

Father Kelly’s journey through various assignments and issues, including a criminal conviction for assaulting minors and his treatment at the Southdown Institute, sheds light on the challenges faced by the Catholic Church in handling cases of misconduct within its clergy. The legal actions being pursued seek to uncover the truth behind these long-standing controversies and hold accountable those responsible for enabling such behavior to persist unchecked.
