An apartment building in Gaza City was struck by an Israeli airstrike, resulting in the deaths of at least five Palestinians, including four women, early on Saturday, according to health and civil defence service officials. The Israeli military confirmed that the strike targeted an apartment in Gaza in an attempt to eliminate Ali al-Amoudi, who is reportedly in charge of the Hamas political office in Gaza. The specifics of the strike that caused the casualties are still being reviewed by the military, while Hamas has not issued an immediate response. Eyewitnesses described a harrowing scene as the strike destroyed the building and sparked a fire, causing chaos and tragedy among residents. Among the victims were a Christian mother and her daughter, as confirmed by medics.

Last year’s U.S.-brokered ceasefire agreement for Gaza includes provisions for the eventual reconstruction of the territory. However, progress towards implementing the deal, which involves terms for Hamas to disarm and Israel to withdraw troops, has been slow. Israel has escalated its strikes on Hamas recently, citing the group’s alleged rearmament and attacks in violation of the ceasefire. Hamas has refuted claims of aggression and arms buildup, accusing Israel of undermining peace efforts in Gaza.

Gaza health officials report that over 1,400 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli actions since the ceasefire in October. Conversely, Israel claims that four of its soldiers have died in Gaza due to militant activities during the same period. The conflict erupted on October 7, 2023, when Hamas-affiliated militants launched an attack on Israel, resulting in casualties and hostages. The ongoing violence in the region has raised concerns about the stability of the ceasefire and the prospects for lasting peace.
