Marvel’s blockbuster film “Avengers: Endgame” reclaimed its position as the highest-grossing movie globally over the weekend, surpassing James Cameron’s “Avatar.” The Disney movie earned $2.9255 billion, narrowly overtaking “Avatar” at $2.9237 billion. The shift occurred after “Endgame” was re-released in theaters with additional footage, marking the second time it surpassed “Avatar” at the box office. The re-release served as a lead-in to the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film “Avengers: Doomsday,” set to premiere on December 18, featuring familiar stars like Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans.
In terms of re-releases, only “Star Wars: A New Hope” and “The Lion King” have opened higher than “Endgame” domestically. The movie broke records in 2019, taking over the top spot from “Avatar” shortly after its release. This achievement was significant as “Avatar” had held the record since 1998. Despite a brief re-capture by “Avatar” in 2021 after a re-release in China, the directors of “Endgame” congratulated James Cameron on his success.
The box office landscape has been unpredictable, with a mix of hits and misses in recent times. While Hollywood had a record-breaking summer in terms of domestic ticket sales, there were notable disappointments such as Steven Spielberg’s “Disclosure Day” and Tom Cruise’s “Digger.” Conversely, unconventional films like “Obsession” and “Resident Evil” have garnered strong audience interest, indicating a shift towards unique storytelling over established franchises.
