Frank Beard, the drummer of the Texas boogie-rock band ZZ Top, known for his role in hits like “Sharp Dressed Man,” “Legs,” and “Gimme All Your Lovin’,” has passed away at the age of 77. Beard was under hospice care when he died at his ranch in Richmond, Texas, with his family by his side, as confirmed by publicist Bob Merlis. Band co-founder and guitarist Billy Gibbons, currently on tour with bassist Elwood Francis, paid tribute to Beard’s musical talent and Texas roots.
ZZ Top, with over 50 million records sold and six No. 1 singles on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Airplay chart, has had a significant impact on the music industry. The band received three Grammy Award nominations and placed seven albums in the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 chart.
The band’s formation dates back to 1969 when Beard, originally from Frankston, Texas, introduced Dusty Hill to Billy Gibbons, culminating in the birth of ZZ Top. Inspired by blues singer Z.Z. Hill and bands like Cream and Jimmy Reed, they maintained their original lineup for more than 50 years. The band’s iconic appearance, featuring long beards and dark sunglasses, remained consistent throughout their career.
ZZ Top’s music, characterized by witty and humorous lyrics, has been featured in various Hollywood films, showcasing their versatile style. Their fusion of rock, blues, and funk created a unique sound described as a “steaming-hot Houston stew.” Hits like “La Grange,” “Tush,” and “Cheap Sunglasses” contributed to their success.
The adoption of long beards as part of ZZ Top’s image was a spontaneous decision that became a trademark look for the band. Their music videos, often featuring models and Gibbons’ custom cars, resonated with audiences and contributed to their popularity.
In 2012, producer Rick Rubin collaborated with the band on their album “La Futura,” marking a successful comeback for ZZ Top. Beard, survived by his wife and three children, temporarily withdrew from the band’s tour in 2025 due to health issues and sadly passed away shortly after.
The loss of Frank Beard marks a significant moment in the history of ZZ Top, as the band mourns the departure of a talented musician and dedicated member.
