Terry Fox, a beloved Canadian figure known for his 1980 cross-country run to raise cancer research awareness and funds, is the subject of a new documentary called “Run Terry Run.” Directed by Sean Menard and premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, the film showcases 96 unreleased reels of footage that bring Fox’s personality, humor, challenges, and determination to light.

Menard, inspired by the lack of quality footage on Fox’s journey, uncovered the unseen reels in a Toronto storage unit with the help of the Terry Fox Foundation. He meticulously restored the footage to 4K quality to create the documentary.

The documentary reveals several insights into Terry Fox’s life and mission:

1. Fox aimed to run 8,000 kilometers from St. John’s to Victoria, covering the distance of a marathon daily. Despite not reaching his final destination due to health issues, his journey sparked a national movement for cancer research.

2. Initially accompanied by his best friend Doug Alward, Fox’s younger brother Darrell joined the run in New Brunswick to ease tensions between the friends.

3. Fox was particular about media coverage, wanting his purpose to be accurately portrayed. Journalist Leslie Scrivener’s columns helped garner public support for his cause.

4. Fox refused personal sponsorships, directing all funds raised towards cancer research. Various organizations supported his run in other ways.

5. Fox believed a car accident contributed to his cancer, although doctors disagreed. His experience in the hospital witnessing other patients’ struggles fueled his determination.

6. Despite his illness, Fox maintained a playful side and connected with others, aiming to inspire hope and raise funds for cancer research.

7. Fox avoided medical appointments, showing his determination and reluctance to be defined by his illness.

8. As his physical condition deteriorated, Fox faced challenges with his prosthetic leg, causing discomfort and needing replacement.

9. Quebec posed communication challenges, while Ontario brought overwhelming public attention, transforming Fox into a national celebrity.

10. The documentary captures Fox’s lighter moments, showcasing his ability to find joy amidst his serious mission.

11. Fox’s sudden hospitalization in Thunder Bay marked the end of his run, revealing his selflessness and positivity in the face of adversity.

Terry Fox’s legacy lives on through the annual Terry Fox runs, raising over $1 billion for cancer research. His inspirational journey continues to impact countless individuals worldwide. “Run Terry Run” hits theaters on Oct. 9, inviting audiences to reflect on Fox’s extraordinary achievements.
