Canadian sprinter Andre De Grasse secured his fifth spot in the upcoming Diamond League Final with a strong performance in the 200-meter race at the Weltklasse Zürich meet. Despite finishing behind Kenny Bednarek and Sinesipho Dambile, De Grasse clocked 20.03 seconds, marking his return to the event after his victory in Zagreb with a time of 19.95 earlier in the season.
De Grasse, who holds the Canadian record of 19.62 set during the 2021 Olympic final in Tokyo, made history in 2023 by clinching the Diamond League Trophy, becoming the first Canadian to do so since Dylan Armstrong in shot put. The upcoming Final in Belgium will feature De Grasse, Marco Arop, and Sarah Mitton among other notable athletes.
In a remarkable night of athletics, new world records were set in the hurdles events. Alison dos Santos and Masai Russell both achieved world-record times in the 400m hurdles and 100m hurdles, respectively. Dos Santos broke the men’s record with a time of 45.80 seconds, while Russell surpassed the women’s record with a time of 12.09 seconds.
Additionally, the pole vault competition witnessed an intense battle between Mondo Duplantis and Emmanouil Karalis as they attempted to break the world record. Karalis emerged as a strong challenger, clearing a height of 6.20 meters and narrowly missing the record. The upcoming Diamond League Final and World Athletics Ultimate Championships promise an exciting showdown between the two athletes.
The event also featured other Canadian athletes, including Lucia Stafford, who competed in the women’s 1,500-meter race. Stafford finished fourth with a time of 4:04.12, falling short of her season’s best. The night concluded with Bednarek expressing his awe at the record-breaking performances, setting the stage for more thrilling competitions ahead.
