The Minnesota Frost have secured their captain Kendall Coyne Schofield for the next two seasons by signing her to a new contract. This move dispels any uncertainties about the 34-year-old potentially taking a break following her contribution to the United States’ Olympic gold win in February.
With this re-signing, the Frost will maintain their experienced core leadership group intact for the fourth season, which has been pivotal since clinching the PWHL’s inaugural two Walter Cup titles in 2024 and ’25. Alongside Coyne Schofield, the team’s leadership includes alternate captains Lee Stecklein and Kelly Pannek.
Expressing her enthusiasm, Coyne Schofield stated, “We’re thrilled to be back for the next two seasons and can’t wait to return for Season 4. I’m ready to put in the work to bring the Walter Cup back to Minnesota.”
Originally from Chicago, Coyne Schofield boasts an impressive resume as a four-time Olympian and two-time Olympic gold medalist. She played a significant role in the negotiations that led to the establishment of the PWHL in the summer of 2023.
In the previous season, Coyne Schofield recorded 12 goals and 23 points in 23 games, despite missing seven games due to an upper-body injury sustained at the Milan-Cortina Games. Her career stats of 63 points (30 goals, 33 assists) in 77 PWHL games rank her third in the league.
As one of the Frost’s foundational players, Coyne Schofield’s playing status for the current season was uncertain until this recent contract signing, as she had remained unsigned and unprotected during the PWHL’s expansion process in June.
Currently, the Frost have 17 players under contract, with eight of them being members of the team’s previous two cup championship squads. Despite finishing third in the standings last season, the Frost were eliminated in a crucial Game 5 of the semifinal series by eventual champions Montreal.
