In a cavernous space formerly occupied by the Campbell Soup factory in Toronto’s western region, Canada’s minister of artificial intelligence and digital innovation unveiled the federal government’s largest investment to date in domestic technology that has the potential to transform artificial intelligence, medical science, and various vital economic sectors.

Amidst the backdrop of the Canada-U.S. trade conflict and frequent challenges to Canada’s sovereignty by U.S. President Donald Trump, Evan Solomon emphasized national pride as he disclosed a $195 million repayable federal funding commitment to Toronto-based Xanadu Quantum Technologies.

“This is truly a momentous occasion for Canada, Xanadu, and the global scientific community,” Solomon declared on Friday. “It exemplifies the Canadian spirit of innovation and resilience.”

Solomon emphasized Canada’s determination to take substantial strides in this initiative, stating, “We are poised to tackle the world’s most significant challenges and emerge as global leaders.”

Established in 2016, Xanadu specializes in developing software and quantum computers utilizing light instead of electricity. Unlike conventional computers that generate heat through electrical currents in metal wires, Xanadu’s technology employs light particles with minimal electrical resistance.

Xanadu’s quantum computers, unlike others in the field, operate at room temperature, eliminating the need for intensive cooling mechanisms. Last June, the company unveiled a pioneering chip capable of generating error-resistant photonic qubits, the fundamental building blocks of quantum computing.

Solomon highlighted the critical nature of quantum computing, emphasizing the potential cybersecurity risks posed by countries possessing fault-tolerant quantum computers. He underscored Canada’s significance in this domain, stating that the country houses leading companies with crucial intellectual property in this sector.

The announcement took place within a decommissioned Campbell’s Soup facility in Toronto, where Xanadu intends to establish advanced manufacturing capabilities for its fault-tolerant utility-scale photonic quantum computers. The 158,000-square-foot facility, estimated at $893 million, is anticipated to employ 275 individuals.

Solomon likened the speed of quantum computing to riding a rocket, contrasting it with the pace of digital computing. The federal government’s $195 million commitment to Xanadu aligns with the National Quantum Strategy launched in 2023, marking a significant investment in manufacturing quantum technology.

Xanadu’s CEO, Christian Weedbrook, acknowledged the federal funding’s contribution to the company’s growth in Canada, emphasizing the potential for substantial technological advancements on Canadian soil.

The government’s involvement in business decision-making was noted by Amy Karam, a business consultant, advocating for measures to retain jobs within the country. The evolving landscape of quantum technology and its implications for national security were discussed by Matthew da Mota, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding Canadian intellectual property.

Solomon emphasized the strategic necessity of supporting Canadian companies at the forefront of quantum computing to ensure the country’s future security, economic prosperity, and scientific advancements.
