Céline Dion is making final preparations for her upcoming five-week residency in Paris commencing next month, shedding light on her battle with illness and the treatments she’s undergone. The renowned Canadian singer shared in an exclusive feature with Harper’s Bazaar that she had been experiencing symptoms of stiff person syndrome for 17 years before being officially diagnosed with the rare neurological autoimmune condition in 2022.

The pain intensified in 2020, reaching a point where she struggled to walk on certain days and required high doses of Valium to manage. Stiff person syndrome is a progressive disorder that worsens over time, affecting a minute portion of the population. Its symptoms include muscle rigidity and painful spasms triggered by stress, loud noises, or sudden movements. Despite the absence of a definitive cause and approved treatment, various therapies can assist in managing the condition.

Prior to her diagnosis, Céline Dion would attribute show cancellations to minor reasons such as a cough or sinus infection, concealing the true extent of her suffering. The singer expressed feeling a sense of dishonesty towards her fans, acknowledging their unwavering support that enabled her to seek extensive medical care.

Following the diagnosis, Dion canceled all upcoming performances, with her last public appearance dating back to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. However, she is gearing up to return to the stage in September. Her recovery routine involves a blend of medication, physical therapy, vocal exercises, and immunotherapy. Additionally, she engages in rigorous 90-minute Pilates sessions thrice weekly and ballet classes twice a week in preparation for her forthcoming shows.

Described as constantly in motion and fearful of immobilization, Céline Dion considers her recovery and the opportunity to perform again a miraculous gift that she values immensely. Looking ahead with strength and a mix of excitement and nervousness, she is set to kick off her Paris residency, featuring 26 concerts scheduled between September 12 and May 29 the following year.
