A concerned father has raised an alarm for parents after uncovering a potential health risk concealed within his daughter’s water bottle.

Jason Sullivan, a father residing in North Bay, Canada, took to TikTok to caution fellow users when he disassembled his daughter’s Yeti water bottle and found black mold inside. In a video, he meticulously dismantled two bottles, revealing a growth of blackened-grey mold under both mouthpieces.

Sullivan advised parents to inspect their children’s bottles, emphasizing that he would not have detected the potentially harmful mold if not for his investigation. He also shared the cleaning tips provided by the bottle company after contacting them.

Following the unsettling discovery, Sullivan reached out to Yeti for guidance on how to properly clean the lids, which were not intended to be taken apart. Yeti recommended boiling the bottle’s components for 5 to 10 minutes.

Addressing the 130,000 viewers of his video, Sullivan emphasized the importance of regularly checking these types of bottles, especially for kids, to prevent hidden buildup or contamination that may go unnoticed, suggesting it might be time to consider alternative options.

Black mold poses a persistent challenge for water bottle owners as it thrives in dark, humid environments, presenting a potential health hazard if not cleaned correctly. Ingesting water from a container with black mold growth can lead to various symptoms, primarily affecting individuals with compromised immune systems.

Symptoms may include gastrointestinal issues, allergies, respiratory complications, and infections, with immunocompromised individuals facing a higher risk of severe effects from repeated exposure. Dr. Marianne Sumego from the Cleveland Clinic highlighted the importance of addressing mold and bacteria exposure, especially for high-risk individuals.

To combat black mold in bottles, various cleaning methods such as boiling in water, using a vinegar-water solution, or hot soapy water can be effective. Dr. Sumego recommended running water bottles through the dishwasher weekly, if dishwasher safe, to prevent mold buildup.

Sullivan’s video sparked responses from other parents who discovered similar mold growth in their children’s water bottles, with one parent describing it as “disgusting.” The importance of regular inspection and proper cleaning of water bottles was reiterated by concerned parents.

The Daily Mirror has reached out to Yeti for a response to the situation.
