After securing my first apartment 5,000 kilometers away from my mother, I received the distressing news that she had been transferred to the ICU. The timing left me questioning my role as a daughter. My mother, who has faced numerous medical challenges including multiple sclerosis, bone cancer requiring chemotherapy at a young age, and mental health issues, was now in need of a heart transplant, a daunting reality for both of us.

As I inked the lease papers for my new living space in Vancouver, my mind was consumed with worry and guilt, overshadowing the excitement of the moment. Despite being physically distant, the emotional turmoil of not being by her side in Cambridge, Ont., during this critical time weighed heavily on me.

Growing up, I had often been labeled as an “Old Soul,” a term that resonated with my mature demeanor and responsible nature. However, what many failed to recognize was the unconventional dynamic of my relationship with my mother. Despite her unwavering support, I had shouldered the role of caregiver from a young age, particularly during challenging times like her declining health before the pandemic hit.

The decision to move away for university was a conflicting one, driven by my desire to pursue personal aspirations while grappling with the fear of leaving behind the person who had always been my rock. With the guidance of my stepfather, who entered my life during my high school years, I learned the importance of balancing self-care with caring for others, realizing that true support is a reciprocal exchange.

While the distance between us has altered the nature of our interactions, my mother’s understanding and encouragement have facilitated this transition. Despite the ongoing guilt of not being physically present during her health struggles, I am gradually embracing the shift from a passive observer to an active participant in my own life, finding solace in the evolving dynamics of our relationship.

As my mother continues her recovery journey under the care of my stepfather, I am navigating the bittersweet emotions of separation and resilience, knowing that our bond transcends physical proximity. Though the guilt lingers, I am learning to prioritize my well-being while cherishing the moments of connection with my mother, drawing strength from our shared experiences and the enduring love that binds us.
