Liberal Member of Parliament Shaun Chen has announced his intention to step down at the end of this week due to ongoing health issues stemming from a car accident he was involved in late last year. Representing Scarborough North since 2015, Chen shared on social media that the accident left him with significant health challenges that have hindered his ability to fulfill his parliamentary duties, including regular travel to Ottawa.
“After careful consideration with my family, I have made the decision to resign from my position as a Member of Parliament,” stated Chen in his announcement. Prior to his political role, Chen served as the chair of the Toronto District School Board.
Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed gratitude towards Chen for his efforts in advocating for youth and combating racism. Carney wished Chen a speedy recovery and success in his future endeavors, emphasizing his belief that Chen will continue to make a positive impact for years to come.
Chen’s resignation adds to a series of departures from parliamentary seats this summer, including former Liberal cabinet minister Steven Guilbeault and Conservative MP Cathay Wagantall who are also set to vacate their positions by the end of the month. Additionally, Conservative MP Larry Brock has announced his plan to step down in mid-September to pursue a new role at the Brantford Crown attorney’s office, while NDP MP Alexandre Boulerice intends to leave his Montreal seat this summer to contest provincially for Québec Solidaire in October.
Chen is scheduled to officially resign on Saturday.
