The Grand National’s latest stage of scratchings has seen ten horses withdrawn from the competition, leaving a field of 34 contenders for the upcoming event at Aintree. Horse racing enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating the prestigious £1 million National race, scheduled less than a month away on April 11. The challenging four-mile, two-and-a-half furlong race involves top staying chasers navigating through 30 fences.
Since 2024, the field size for the National has been capped at 34 horses, down from 40. The recent scratchings have provided insights into the potential lineup for the event. Initially, three horses were pulled out before an additional seven were withdrawn. Notable eliminations include Western Fold, Croke Park, Better Days Ahead, Search For Glory, Handstands, Pic Roc, and Leave of Absence.
The current field of 34 is led by Willie Mullins’ duo, 2024 winner I Am Maximus and Bobbyjo Chase victor Grangeclare West, who finished third last year. With the possibility of further changes in the upcoming weeks, as some horses may opt to participate in the Irish National on April 6, the competition remains open. Oscars Brother is currently the favorite for the Irish National.
One of the prominent British contenders is Haiti Couleurs, the winner of the Welsh and Irish Nationals. Trainer Rebecca Curtis is considering pitching the gelding at Aintree after his recent performance at the Gold Cup in Cheltenham. Curtis expressed her excitement about Haiti Couleurs’ potential participation, emphasizing his strength in National-type races.
Curtis stated, “If he remains fit and healthy in the coming weeks, there’s no reason why we wouldn’t aim for Aintree. Many horses compete at both Cheltenham and Aintree, and given his past success in National races, it seems like the logical next step for him.” The plan aligns with last year’s strategy when Haiti Couleurs ran in both Cheltenham and the Irish National, with Curtis highlighting the manageable fence sizes at Aintree as a positive factor.
