Hillsborough survivors have initiated a petition urging the removal of former Merseyside Chief Constable Norman Bettison’s knighthood. This action follows a scathing report indicating that he would have faced gross negligence charges in connection with the 1989 tragedy that claimed 97 lives. The Independent Office for Police Conduct’s extensive investigation revealed that 12 police officers would have been subject to gross misconduct proceedings due to critical lapses on the day of the disaster and deliberate efforts to shift blame to fans afterward.

The report highlighted that allegations against Bettison, who was a chief inspector in Yorkshire at the time, would have focused on accusations of deliberate dishonesty regarding his role in the disaster during his appointment to the top police position at Merseyside Police in 1998. He was also implicated in providing misleading statements to the press.

The tragic incident occurred during a FA Cup semi-final match between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest on April 15, 1989. Inadequate crowd control measures led to a fatal crush in the central pens after police opened an exit gate, failing to redirect supporters away from the overcrowded area.

Amid the chaos, South Yorkshire Police falsely accused Liverpool supporters of causing the disaster by arriving late, intoxicated, and without tickets. Decades of advocacy by the victims’ families have debunked these claims, leading the Hillsborough Survivors Support Alliance to call for Bettison’s knighthood and the Queen’s Policing Medal to be revoked.

The petition emphasizes the need for accountability, citing the pain inflicted by gross misconduct and misinformation. It asserts that honors should symbolize integrity and service, urging authorities to rectify the injustice by stripping Bettison of his titles.

Margaret Aspinall, who lost her son at Hillsborough, questioned the basis for Bettison retaining his knighthood, stating that individuals who deceive should not be honored. Despite the mounting pressure, Sir Norman has refrained from commenting on the demands to rescind his honors, with his wife declining to provide any statement.

In the ongoing discourse surrounding Hillsborough, the call for justice remains steadfast as the petition seeks to unify voices for truth, accountability, and remembrance of the lives lost in the tragedy.
