Iran reported on Wednesday that it had carried out attacks on 10 ships near the Strait of Hormuz in response to the sinking of five Iranian oil tankers by the U.S. This exchange marked the most significant series of retaliatory strikes on maritime vessels by both parties since the commencement of the six-month-long conflict.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran disclosed that it had retaliated by launching a ballistic missile strike on a U.S. military base near Al Azraq in eastern Jordan. Additionally, Iran claimed to have targeted two U.S. naval ships and eight oil tankers that were attempting to navigate through a restricted area within the Strait of Hormuz.
These incidents in and around the critical water passage led to a surge in global oil prices, with the international benchmark Brent crude surpassing $100 per barrel for the first time since July. The ongoing conflict has disrupted oil markets, with prices previously dropping to $70 amid expectations of a potential agreement between the U.S. and Iran to facilitate the safe passage of stranded oil tankers out of the Persian Gulf.
The escalating hostilities between Saudi Arabia and the Iran-aligned Houthis in Yemen have further added to uncertainties in energy markets. The recent Houthi attacks on four cities in Saudi Arabia resulted in significant fires at oil facilities, causing visible damage. The U.S. gas prices have risen, impacting consumers and becoming a pressing issue ahead of the upcoming November midterm elections.
Gas prices in the U.S. saw a notable increase, with regular gasoline averaging $4.15 per gallon and diesel reaching $5.90 per gallon on Tuesday, marking substantial year-over-year rises. The likelihood of a comprehensive agreement before the U.S. midterm elections is deemed increasingly slim by analysts, further contributing to market uncertainties.
Canada has also witnessed a surge in gas prices since the conflict’s outset, prompting the government to extend the gas tax holiday until the end of January. Amid these developments, Iran has declared an expanded restricted maritime zone in the vicinity of the Strait of Hormuz, signaling heightened tensions in the region.
Furthermore, a drone strike on an oil tanker in Iraqi waters and conflicting reports of vessel incidents in the Gulf and Gulf of Oman have added to the volatile situation. Iran’s actions have significantly disrupted the flow of global oil and natural gas through the Strait of Hormuz, impacting international markets and energy security.
