A Food Basics store will replace a Metro grocery store in Ottawa’s South Keys neighborhood this autumn, resulting in job losses for numerous employees. Metro Inc. explained that the conversion is aimed at better serving customer needs in the area. Despite the transition, former Southgate Metro employees have limited options to transfer to other Metro stores due to collective agreement terms. However, they are encouraged to apply for positions at the new Food Basics store. The new store is mandated to hire a minimum number of former Southgate Metro employees, considering their seniority within the different wage structures.
The United Food and Commercial Workers union negotiated enhanced options for affected workers, including job opportunities at the new Food Basics store and improved severance packages. Legal experts have raised questions about the company’s claim of a work shortage and potential anti-union behavior, which could lead to prolonged legal disputes.
