Argos is currently offering a new device, the Manhattan S4-R set-top box, which provides similar features to Sky Q but without any monthly fees. This device allows users to record programs, pause live TV, and store content on its built-in hard drive. Unlike Sky Q, the Manhattan S4-R operates on the Freesat platform, which utilizes an existing satellite dish to deliver over 100 channels for free, including popular channels like BBC, ITV1, Channel 4, and more.
The Manhattan S4-R is designed with a user-friendly interface, search functionality, and access to a vast library of on-demand content, with supported apps such as BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, and My5. While it may not offer premium sports and movie packages like Sky Q, Freesat provides a cost-effective way to access a wide range of entertainment content.
Priced at £219.99, the Manhattan S4-R 500GB model is available at retailers like Argos and Amazon, with larger 1TB and 2TB versions expected to launch soon. Manhattan’s COO, Alex Arbab-Zadeh, highlighted the enhanced recording capabilities of the S4-R, allowing up to four simultaneous recordings. The company aims to offer a subscription-free alternative for households seeking affordable TV options with flexibility and choice.
In a similar vein, the Pleio puck has entered the market as another device challenging traditional TV services by offering free streaming access to over 50 live channels through the internet. After initial stock shortages, the Pleio puck is now available for purchase at £99.99 and includes a gaming controller and access to over 200 online games.
Sky has also announced a 20 percent price reduction for the upcoming World Cup, with the Sky Glass Air TV starting at £4.50 per month. Customers interested in the upgraded Sky Glass Gen 2 model can opt for a monthly fee starting from £11, featuring a 4K Quantum Dot display and built-in Dolby Atmos soundbar.
