Skiing icon Lindsey Vonn has given an update on her condition via social media after her third surgery following a serious accident that shattered her Olympic aspirations at the Milan‑Cortina Games. Vonn, a 41-year-old American, sustained a leg fracture during the games and had to be airlifted to a hospital following a significant crash, shortly after tearing her ACL.
During the women’s downhill event, Vonn, representing Team USA, hit a gate, leading to a loss of balance and a collision with the slope just 13 seconds into her run. After initial treatment, she was transported by helicopter to a nearby medical facility for further care.
Taking to Instagram on Wednesday evening, Vonn shared, “I underwent my 3rd successful surgery today. Success now holds a different significance compared to a few days ago. I am progressing slowly, but I am confident in my recovery. Grateful for the exceptional medical team, friends, and family supporting me, along with the overwhelming love and encouragement from people worldwide.
She also extended congratulations to her teammates and all Team USA athletes for their inspiring performances, providing her with motivation and reasons to cheer.
It was later revealed that Vonn would require multiple surgeries to mend her leg, with the recent procedure being the third one. A prolonged period of recovery lies ahead, but there is a possibility that Vonn could return to skiing within a year.
Federica Brignone, a fellow skier who faced severe leg fractures and an ACL tear at the 2025 Italian Championships, made a comeback after just 10 months. Brignone competed against Vonn at Cortina’s Olympia piste.
Andrea Panzeri, the head of the Medical Commission of the Italian Winter Sports Federation, noted, “Assessing the injury without X-rays is challenging. It is a complex fracture that can potentially impact an athlete’s career, regardless of age. However, Brignone overcame a serious fracture.”
Orthopaedic surgeon Filippo Pierfrancesco Calanna from Milan’s Gaetano Pini Orthopaedic and Trauma Centre mentioned, “Recovery tends to be slower as one ages, despite Vonn’s exceptional physical attributes. Motivation and mindset play crucial roles. There is a risk of early arthritis development, leading to joint issues, stiffness, and discomfort.”
Vonn’s previous leg injuries, including a partial knee implant, could influence her recovery process and timeline.
