Australia is in mourning following a tragic incident at Bondi Beach in Sydney where two suspected terrorist gunmen, identified as a father and son, carried out a shooting spree that resulted in the deaths of 16 people. This marks the deadliest mass shooting in the country since the Port Arthur massacre nearly three decades ago in April 1996.

The disturbing events in Sydney, where individuals attending a Hanukkah event were targeted, evoked memories of past tragedies such as the one in Tasmania where innocent children were senselessly killed. A forensic psychologist, Professor Paul E. Mullen, recounted a chilling conversation with Martin Bryant, the perpetrator of the Port Arthur massacre, revealing a haunting remark that Bryant made during their interview.

In his book “Running Amok,” Paul delved into the psychology of mass murderers, highlighting their intense resentment towards the world and their tendency to harbor grievances. He noted that factors such as child abuse were not prominent in their backgrounds, and they often held extreme right-wing political views or fundamentalist religious beliefs.

In response to the recent shooting at Bondi Beach, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has indicated a need for tougher gun laws in Australia. Discussions on implementing stricter regulations, including limits on the number of guns individuals can possess and regular license reviews, are set to take place at a national cabinet meeting. This move echoes the gun law changes that were enforced after the Port Arthur massacre to prevent such tragic events from recurring.
