The United Kingdom has recently acquired a cutting-edge weapon system capable of firing eight rounds per minute while on the move at speeds of up to 100km/h.

Known as the RCH 155, this innovative weapon is mounted on a BOXER armored vehicle and has a striking range of 70km. The UK and Germany have signed a £52 million contract for this advanced weapon system, providing a significant enhancement to British military capabilities, drawing insights from recent conflicts like the one in Ukraine.

The RCH 155 boasts remarkable capabilities, with a range of 700km without the need for refueling, equivalent to a drive from Cornwall to Newcastle. Unlike conventional artillery that requires stationary setup before firing, this weapon can engage targets while in motion, making it more agile and challenging for adversaries to counter. Operated by just two crew members due to advanced automation, it offers the flexibility to engage targets from any direction without repositioning.

Luke Pollard MP, the Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry, emphasized the strategic significance of this new artillery system, stating that it enables the British Army to fire on the move and swiftly reposition to avoid incoming fire, reflecting crucial lessons learned from conflicts like Ukraine. This development aligns with the UK’s defense strategy and procurement decisions following the Strategic Defence Review.

Currently, soldiers operate 14 Archer artillery systems as a temporary replacement for the AS90 guns provided to Ukraine. Through the collaboration between the UK and Germany, both nations will share test data and facilities, ensuring access to top-notch equipment for their armed forces.

Edward Cutts, the Senior Responsible Owner of Mobile Fires in the Army, highlighted the collaborative effort with Germany as a testament to the Trinity House Agreement’s strength and ambition. This partnership accelerates the delivery of cutting-edge artillery capabilities for the British Army efficiently and cost-effectively, enhancing interoperability between UK and German forces crucial for NATO’s collective defense.

In a recent development, Defence Secretary John Healey issued a warning to Vladimir Putin, affirming the UK’s commitment to supporting Ukraine and investing in mobilizing British troops swiftly in the event of a peace deal. This announcement follows the launch of a new military intelligence service amid increasing threats to the UK, including cyber-attacks, disinformation campaigns, and risks to global maritime trade routes.
