Millions of internet users in the UK often face challenges with connectivity due to online congestion, particularly during evening hours when many households are simultaneously engaging in activities like streaming, downloading, and video calls. This surge in demand can lead to slower speeds as local networks become overloaded.

An analogy can be drawn between broadband and a motorway: just like increased traffic slows down movement, a higher number of users can cause internet speeds to drop significantly. Peak congestion hours, typically between 7pm and 11pm, witness a noticeable decline in performance.

A recent study by Broadband Genie has highlighted the areas in the UK most impacted by evening slowdowns. Wigan (WN1) emerged as the top location, experiencing a substantial drop in average download speeds from 167Mbps during off-peak times to 75Mbps in the evenings, representing a 55% decrease. Other areas affected include Galashiels (TD1), Harrogate (HG1), Exeter (EX1), and Rochester (ME1).

In contrast, some regions in the UK actually see an improvement in speeds during peak hours. Newport ranked highest in the study, followed by Oxford, Glasgow, Blackburn, and Cambridge. Broadband Genie explained that internet networks, like roads, can suffer from congestion, leading to varying performance levels at different times.

The report also highlighted regional disparities across the UK, with Scotland showing overall improvement in broadband performance during evenings, while Wales and the East of England also performed well. On the other hand, the South West experienced a decrease of around 15% in speeds during peak periods compared to daytime performance.

Experts recommend several strategies to enhance home internet connections, such as placing routers in open, central locations away from obstructions and rebooting them regularly to address temporary network issues.
