A Winter Olympics figure skating judge from France is facing allegations of bias towards her country’s team, leading to their gold medal win. The French pair of Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron narrowly edged out the American duo, Madison Chock and Evan Bates, by a mere 1.43 points, sparking controversy due to the scoring by French judge Jezabel Dabouis.

The ice dance competition involves two routines performed over two days: the rhythm dance and the free dance. Chock and Bates, previous world champions, were favored to win in Milan. However, after the rhythm dance segment, Fournier Beaudry and Cizeron were placed first by judges, with discrepancies in scoring raising eyebrows.

Despite five judges ranking the French pair highest, with only three favoring Chock and Bates, the point margin was still close. Notably, Dabouis awarded significantly more points to her compatriots, creating a notable difference in scores.

In the subsequent free dance, a majority of judges rated Chock and Bates higher, but Dabouis again awarded a significantly higher score to Fournier Beaudry and Cizeron. The International Skating Union defended the scoring system, emphasizing the normal range of scores by different judges and their commitment to fairness.

Following the event, Chock and Bates expressed mixed emotions about the judges’ decisions, highlighting the pride in their performances. Bates acknowledged the subjectivity of the sport, recognizing that outcomes can be influenced by judges’ perspectives.
