Users of various devices, including Samsung models, are reporting significant screen flickering issues while using the Gmail app. Some individuals have encountered complete disappearance of text, while others are faced with blank white boxes instead of their email messages.
Frustrated users have taken to social media platforms to express their discontent. One user, Jeremiah, expressed his frustration on X, addressing Gmail directly and highlighting the ongoing flickering problem on folding phones like the Samsung Fold.
Similar grievances have surfaced on Google’s support forums, where a user described the screen flickering making it impossible to read emails despite trying various troubleshooting steps such as force-stopping the app, clearing the cache, and device restarts.
Google’s product expert, Kimiya Kitani, has indicated that the issue may be related to Android System WebView, an essential Android component enabling apps to display web content within the application itself. Kitani acknowledged that certain devices, particularly Samsung tablets, are experiencing intermittent issues with Android System WebView, which has been escalated to Google for resolution.
Though the exact number of impacted users is not confirmed, reports suggest that Samsung foldable devices like the Galaxy Z Fold series and specific Galaxy tablets are among the most affected gadgets.
As a temporary workaround, Kitani suggests rotating the device to potentially stop the screen flickering. The recommended fix involves opening the email in portrait mode, switching to landscape mode until the screen stabilizes, and reverting back to portrait mode.
While awaiting a permanent resolution from Google, rotating the device as described may serve as a simple solution for affected users.
