The early start of the Christmas season is a common complaint that many make each year.
While Thanksgiving in the US helps delay the festive spirit, in the UK, we often find ourselves surrounded by Christmas decorations from the beginning of December.
Spending two months each year immersed in holiday cheer with constant reminders of Christmas songs and decorations may seem overwhelming to some. However, there is a town where the Christmas spirit never fades – Santa Claus, Indiana.
In Santa Claus, visitors can enjoy various Christmas-themed attractions such as Santa’s Candy Castle, the Santa Claus Museum, Christmas Lake Golf Course, and Santa’s Stables throughout the year. Whether it’s winter or summer, the town is adorned with numerous Santa statues to keep the holiday spirit alive.
Interestingly, the town’s name predates its festive reputation. Originally named Santa Fe in 1854, the town faced a challenge when trying to establish a post office due to a pre-existing Santa Fe Post Office in another Indiana town. This led to the town’s transformation into Santa Claus.
Legend has it that the town collectively decided on the name Santa Claus during a Christmas Eve gathering. A little girl supposedly heard a Santa sleigh bell, exclaimed “Santa Claus,” and the town adopted the name.
Over time, the town embraced its Christmassy identity, with streets like Prancer Lane and businesses themed around Christmas emerging. Santa’s Candy Castle, established in 1936, sparked a trend of Christmas-themed enterprises in the area, including a popular theme park now known as Holiday World.
Unlike its abandoned namesake in Arizona, Santa Claus, Indiana, has thrived and become a popular destination. The town attracts more visitors than its population on most days, making it a bustling hub for holiday enthusiasts.
Today, Santa Claus boasts a wide range of Christmas-themed establishments, although it’s the non-holiday businesses that offer a unique contrast in a town so deeply rooted in Christmas traditions.
The town’s name has led to an influx of letters addressed to Father Christmas at the Santa Claus Post Office each year. Since 1914, a dedicated team at the post office has been responding to every letter sent to St. Nick, creating a magical experience for visitors during the holiday season.
While most people pack away their holiday decorations in January, the residents of Santa Claus, Indiana, continue to celebrate Christmas year-round, embracing the festive spirit beyond the traditional holiday season.
