A small aircraft from Mexico, carrying a young medical patient along with seven others, crashed resulting in the deaths of at least five individuals. The tragic incident occurred on Monday, December 22, near Galveston, prompting authorities to initiate search operations in the waters off the Texas coastline.

Mexico’s Navy has confirmed that among the passengers were four Navy officers and four civilians, including a child, although the identities of the deceased have not been disclosed. Notably, two of the travelers were associated with the Michou and Mau Foundation, a charitable organization dedicated to assisting Mexican children with severe burn injuries. The US Coast Guard has officially reported five fatalities from the crash and is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

The aircraft went down on Monday afternoon close to a causeway base near Galveston, situated approximately 50 miles (80.5 kilometers) southeast of Houston along the Texas coast. According to a statement by the Mexican Navy, the plane was engaged in a medical mission when it encountered an “accident.” The Mexican Navy is collaborating with local authorities to conduct search and rescue operations in the area.

Following the crash, the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office dispatched various response units, including dive teams, crime scene investigators, drone operators, and patrol officers. Additionally, teams from the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are present at the crash site to gather information and investigate the incident further.

The Galveston County Sheriff’s Office has stated that the crash remains under investigation, and updates will be provided as new details emerge. The region has been experiencing foggy weather conditions recently, raising questions about whether visibility issues played a role in the accident. A National Weather Service meteorologist mentioned that around 2:30 pm on Monday, dense fog with limited visibility of about half a mile enveloped the area, with similar conditions expected to persist through Tuesday morning.
