Rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine recently shared his experience of being incarcerated alongside former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. Known by his real name, Daniel Hernandez, the 29-year-old musician voluntarily entered the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn, New York, earlier this week.
Hernandez’s admission to the MDC follows his acknowledgment of involvement in a gang-related incident where he assaulted an individual and was found in possession of illegal substances last year. He received a three-month federal custody sentence in December, stemming from a violation of his supervised release terms that had previously resulted in a 45-day sentence in 2024.
Taking to Instagram, Hernandez mentioned his arrival at the MDC and expressed plans to engage in basketball activities with his fellow inmates while incarcerated. He also recalled past experiences of sharing a cell with prominent figures like Sean “Diddy” Combs and former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez.
This marks Hernandez’s second imprisonment within a year due to probation violations. He will now be in the company of Nicolas Maduro, who faced a recent USA-led raid to apprehend him and his wife, Cilia Flores. The MDC has housed various high-profile individuals, including figures such as Sam Bankman-Fried, Ghislaine Maxwell, and the notorious drug lord “El Chapo.”
Situated in Brooklyn’s Sunset Park neighborhood, the MDC primarily detains individuals awaiting trial in the US District Court for New York’s eastern district. Additionally, individuals serving short-term sentences are also accommodated at the facility, as per reports from the Guardian.
A recent fact sheet released by the Federal Bureau of Prisons indicates an improvement in conditions at the MDC since January 2024. The document highlights reduced violence, stricter inmate schedules, and enhanced security measures to prevent contraband entry, ensuring the safety of both inmates and staff.
Despite these reported improvements, the MDC has been previously dubbed as a “hell on earth,” with instances of violence leading to fatalities and injuries in 2024. Overcrowding remains a concern, with the facility often accommodating more inmates than its intended capacity, resulting in substandard living conditions.
