Severe wildfire seasons in Newfoundland and Labrador are posing challenges to public safety and impacting routine operations in rural and remote regions, including essential geoscience activities supporting the mining sector. The occurrence of fires can render work areas inaccessible due to safety concerns, leading to the diversion of aircraft typically used to transport scientists to rural locations for fieldwork to assist in wildfire response efforts.

This situation has added complexity to the planning, scheduling, and rescheduling tasks for scientific program directors. Despite these challenges, Minister Lloyd Parrott affirmed that the survey’s work continues to progress. In the previous year, the actual expenditure by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador on transportation for geophysical survey work for the Geological Survey of Newfoundland and Labrador fell $321,800 below the budgeted amount, mainly attributed to reduced helicopter usage caused by wildfire-related constraints.

Although scientists sometimes employ drones for field programs, the nature of their work often necessitates sample collection and activities beyond the scope of drone capabilities. While land travel can facilitate access to certain areas, helicopters remain indispensable, especially in Labrador. Disruptions in helicopter operations can occur due to adverse weather conditions like high winds, cloud cover, or fog, with wildfires further exacerbating the situation.

Minister Parrott confirmed that some helicopter resources supporting geoscience fieldwork have been redirected to aid in wildfire suppression efforts this summer. However, the impact on the survey’s progress has been less significant compared to the challenges faced during the 2025 wildfire season.

Recent joint projects, including data collection for regions in southeastern Labrador with potential rare earth elements and a geophysical survey of the White Bay area, have been vital. The Geological Survey of Newfoundland and Labrador is currently managing ten active field projects, with a focus on six areas in Newfoundland and four in Labrador, along with two planned airborne surveys utilizing fixed-wing aircraft as part of the scientific program.

Beyond fieldwork, scientists conduct various tests on collected samples and analyze data, with the outcomes shared through publicly available reports. Amanda McCallum, executive director of Mining Industry N.L., emphasized the invaluable role of this work in driving investment, de-risking projects, informing land use decisions, and fostering potential discoveries.

Despite the challenges posed by wildfires, record-high levels of private investment in exploration activities are being witnessed in the province, with projected spending for the year at $283.3 million, up from the previous year’s $249 million. McCallum highlighted the positive impact of this investment on rural and remote regions, contributing to economic growth and foreign direct investment.

McCallum acknowledged that the industry is adapting to wildfire disruptions by adjusting fieldwork schedules but expressed confidence in the sector’s ability to manage such challenges effectively. Mining, being the second-largest contributor to Newfoundland and Labrador’s GDP, supports around 8,920 jobs, including those involved in exploration activities.

As of the latest report, the wildfire risk level across Newfoundland and Labrador remains low, with only four active fires in central and northern Labrador. While the number of fires this year has been fewer compared to the previous year, the total area burned has been larger. This situation underscores the importance of ongoing efforts to mitigate wildfire risks and ensure the continuity of essential geoscience work in the region.
